Canon 7D Review

The Canon 7D is an advanced subframe digital SLR camera that the company claims is in the same class with the Canon 5D Mark II. We’re told it’s a whole new line, and not just a newly-named Canon 60D. It’s not clear if the Canon 7D will supplant the Canon 50D, but what is exciting is that the Canon EOS 7D comes with features that seems like an enthusiast’s fulfilled checklist.

Some features are clearly Canon’s responses to digital SLR users’ wish lists in any corner of the camera market. These are features that used to be seen only on one or two digital camera models from Sony, Nikon, Olympus, and Pentax. The bottom line result is that Canon’s digital SLR users can now say that the features they have always admired in other cameras can now be found in the Canon 7D.

Going to the walk-around details first provides added context. The Canon 7D is a bit larger in size to the Canon 50D, measuring 5.8 x 4.4 x 2.9 inches and weighs 2.08 lbs. (945gms) with the CF card and battery. If you include the 28-135mm kit lens, it will weigh 3.23 lbs. (1,467gms).

Canon fully competes in the megapixel race with the Canon 7D’s new 18-megapixel APS-C sensor with a crop factor of 1.6x. Pixels are 4.3 microns in size, and Canon states this new sensor gathers a lot of light because of their gap less microlenses.

The Canon 7D is a digital SLR that’s designed for speed. With its dual Digic 4 chips, it speeds up processing of large 14-bit files to keep up with its shutter’s top speed of 8 frames per second. To reach this speed, even the sensor needed to be tweaked with an 8-channel readout, in order to draw the image off the sensor more quickly. At top speed, the 7D’s buffer can handle 15 RAW images, or 94 JPEGs.

The Canon 7D has the same shutter mechanism design used by Canon’s 1D-series digital SLR models, that is rated at 150,000 cycles. The ISO range is from 100 to 6,400 and up to 12,800 expanded setting, and EV compensation in either direction have been expanded to 5 stops. The 7D also features an HD movie mode that captures full HD at 30p.

Its built-in flash can handle a wider range of up to 15mm wide-angle lenses, similar to the new version EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Another first feature for Canon is the flash’s capability to also serve as the remote commander with up to 3 groups of flashes.

The Canon 7D retails for $1,538.44 (body-only), while a kit with 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens retails for $1,699.99.
